PayPal, Stripe Invoice, or Bank Transfer: What Should Direct Clients Use to Pay You?
A direct client asks how to pay you. PayPal, a Stripe invoice and a bank transfer cost different amounts depending on the invoice size. Here is the math.
When a direct client asks how to pay you, choosing the easiest option is tempting. But payment processing, invoice fees and currency conversion can make a meaningful difference to what you keep. Here is how three common routes compare.
How each one works
PayPal: Your client pays your PayPal account. PayPal deducts a percentage plus a fixed fee. Rates depend on your country and the sender's. PayPal's India seller page lists 4.40% plus a fixed fee for international payments, including a fixed fee of $0.30 for US dollar payments. Its standard bank withdrawal has no separate fee when no conversion is involved. India accounts are automatically transferred to a local bank under PayPal's India rules, and currency conversion may add a cost.
Stripe invoice: Your client pays a Stripe invoice by card or, where supported, US bank debit. Stripe's standard US card processing rate is 2.9% plus $0.30, with an additional 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is required. Stripe Invoicing Starter adds 0.4% per paid one-time invoice. US ACH Direct Debit processing is 0.8%, capped at $5, with the invoice fee separate. Eligibility, payment methods and rates vary by country and plan.
Bank transfer: Your client sends money to the account details you provide, such as a bank account or eligible Wise receiving details. Wise's US pricing lists free domestic USD ACH receipt, while a USD wire or Swift payment costs $6.11 to receive. The sender or intermediary banks may charge separately.
What the fees look like on three invoice sizes
These are illustrations of different regional fee schedules, not a quote for one freelancer. We compare PayPal India's 4.4% plus $0.30 USD receiving fee with Stripe's US international-card rate of 4.4% plus $0.30 and Invoicing Starter at 0.4%. For Stripe ACH, we assume 0.8% capped at $5 plus the 0.4% invoice fee. The client must have an eligible US bank account. We assume $0 to receive an eligible Wise USD ACH transfer. Conversion, sender charges, bank verification and any other fees are excluded. PayPal India normally transfers the balance to a local bank, so a real transaction may also require conversion. These accounts and methods may not all be available to the same person.
- $100 invoice: PayPal receiving fee $4.70; Stripe card and invoice fees $5.10; Stripe ACH and invoice fees $1.20; eligible Wise ACH receipt $0.
- $1,000 invoice: PayPal $44.30; Stripe card and invoice $48.30; Stripe ACH and invoice $9.00; eligible Wise ACH receipt $0.
- $5,000 invoice: PayPal $220.30; Stripe card and invoice $240.30; Stripe ACH and invoice $25.00; eligible Wise ACH receipt $0.
Percentage fees grow with the invoice. Even where a processing fee is capped, a separate invoice fee can still grow with the amount. Add conversion costs when you move money to your spending currency. Our multi-currency income guide explains how to track the full chain.
Speed and disputes
PayPal payments may be available quickly, although holds and bank processing can delay access. Stripe payout timing varies by country, business and payout schedule. International bank transfers can take several business days.
Card and wallet payments may be disputed or reversed. Stripe and PayPal publish dispute fees, which depend on the transaction and circumstances. Bank transfer recovery works differently and may be difficult if you supply the wrong details. Confirm your payment instructions before sending an invoice.
Which route fits your situation?
- Small invoices: Fixed fees make up a larger share, so compare the exact fee for a typical payment.
- Large invoices: Percentage charges add up. Ask whether the client can use a low-cost bank route and offer a card as an alternative if useful.
- Non-technical clients: A familiar card or PayPal option may reduce friction. Account for fees when setting your rate.
- Recurring clients: Agree payment instructions once and check the net amount that arrives each month.
How to word it on your invoice

Track what actually arrives
For every payment, log the gross invoice amount, each fee, any conversion rate and the final amount received. That makes it easier to compare routes and plan around cleared money.
Summary
In this illustration, the PayPal India receiving fee and Stripe US card processing fee start at 4.4% plus $0.30, but Stripe Invoicing Starter adds 0.4% per paid invoice. An eligible bank transfer may be cheaper, especially on larger invoices. Availability, exchange rates, additional fees and client preferences matter.
